For a brand which has established a firm reputation for their bold uncompromising watch designs, the Bell & Ross WWI series was certainly a departure from the formula which laid the Parisian company’s foundations, but in spirit its military associations are pure Bell & Ross DNA.

Inspired by the early wristwatches worn mostly by officers during the Great War, the Bell & Ross WWI faithfully recreates the classic designs of the times. An elegant round case with ornate crown and expansive sapphire crystal is presented on period wire lugs to superb effect.

The Bell & Ross WW1 Edición Limitada is the outstanding piece in the collection, and magnificent in 18Kt rose gold. Its influences are a celebration of the Nicaraguan Pura cigar, and this theme is captured to wonderful effect in the tobacco dial and its contrasting gold tones and detailing.

 Large arabic numerals are coated with gold powder to give a slightly elevated and textured result, and beyond them the minutes/seconds track defines the edge of the dial. The gold hands are gracefully curved and the slender seconds hand tipped in red all add period authenticity.

Up at the 9 o’clock position a polished porthole opens onto the balance whose constant pulsing motion creates a delicate yet captivating animation of the dial, while further down the five day power reserve scale provides an accurate indication of the need to wind the twin barrels to restore energy levels for another 120 hour cycle.

Inside beats the hand-wound manual movement, and through the sapphire caseback the exquisite sunburst detailing of its rose gold toned plates serves as testament to the quality of the workmanship which has gone into this beautiful piece.

A fine alligator strap secures with an 18Kt tang buckle and the watch is presented in a magnificent box made from macassar ebony, which when not home to the watch, doubles as a working humidor, complete with humidifier and hygrometer
