Oversized Military Watch

The Longines Ref. 4092 Oversized Military Watch is an exceptionally distinctive example of late-1930s tool-watch design, notable for dimensions that were extraordinary for the period. Measuring an imposing 43mm in diameter, the Ref. 4092 was substantially larger than conventional wristwatches of its era and is today regarded as one of Longines' most recognisable pre-war military-style references. Comparable documented examples were supplied to Eastern European markets, including through Longines' Polish agent, Zipper.

This particular example features a chromed-metal case with stainless-steel caseback, paired with a highly legible military-style dial displaying oversized Arabic numerals, an outer minute track and subsidiary seconds at 6 o'clock. Longines currently classifies this dial as "refreshed", following uncertainty surrounding the unusual typography, although it had previously been considered original.

Powering the watch is the period-correct Longines Calibre 17.26, a manually wound mechanical movement equipped with 15 jewels. The large movement architecture and subsidiary-seconds configuration complement the substantial proportions and utilitarian character of the Ref. 4092. Documented examples of the reference confirm the same 43mm case dimensions and Calibre 17.26 configuration.

According to the accompanying documentation, this watch was originally purchased on 24 December 1938 through Zipper, Longines' agent in Poland, placing it firmly within the historically significant pre-Second World War production period. The watch is accompanied by a Longines Certificate of Authenticity issued in 2023 and is supplied with a two-year warranty, adding valuable documentation to an already unusual and highly collectible vintage Longines.
