Introduced in 2015, the Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time reference 5524G represents a distinctive departure from the manufacture's traditionally understated designs. Combining aviation-inspired aesthetics with an innovative dual-time complication, this exceptional timepiece draws inspiration from Patek Philippe's historical pilot's watches of the 1930s while incorporating contemporary mechanical sophistication.

Crafted from 18K white gold, the substantial 42mm case features a refined combination of polished surfaces, elegantly curved lugs and a commanding wrist presence. Measuring approximately 11mm in thickness, its proportions balance the functionality of a traditional pilot's watch with the luxurious finishing associated with Patek Philippe's most celebrated creations.

A striking blue varnished dial with a subtle textured finish provides the centre piece of the design. Large applied white gold Arabic numerals filled with luminous material ensure excellent readability, while distinctive sword-shaped hands reinforce the watch's aviation-inspired character. Contrasting luminous indications provide clear visibility in reduced lighting conditions.

Central to the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time is its sophisticated dual-time-zone complication, allowing the wearer to monitor both local time and home time simultaneously. A solid sword-shaped hour hand displays local time, while a skeletonised hour hand indicates home time. When both time zones coincide, the two hands overlap, maintaining the appearance of a conventional three-hand watch.

Two prominent pushers positioned at 8 and 10 o'clock allow the local hour hand to be adjusted independently in one-hour increments, either forwards or backwards. Patek Philippe's patented quarter-turn locking mechanism prevents accidental adjustments, providing additional security during everyday wear.

Separate day/night indicators for local and home time are positioned at 9 and 3 o'clock respectively, allowing the wearer to distinguish between daytime and nighttime in each location. A subsidiary date display at 6 o'clock is synchronised with local time, automatically accommodating changes when travelling across different time zones.

Powering the watch is Patek Philippe's self-winding calibre 324 S C FUS, comprising 294 individual components and 29 jewels. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), the movement delivers a power reserve of approximately 35 to 45 hours.

Technical refinements include a Gyromax balance, Spiromax balance spring and a central winding rotor crafted from 21K gold. Visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback, the movement displays traditional haute horlogerie finishing and bears the prestigious Patek Philippe Seal.

Water resistance is rated to 30 metres, while a vintage-style brown calfskin leather strap with contrasting stitching and an 18K white gold clevis-style pin buckle completes the watch's distinctive appearance.

Offered as a pre-owned example from 2020, this Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time 5524G is presented in mint condition, accompanied by its original box and papers, with warranty documentation dated May 2020.

Combining precious-metal construction, sophisticated dual-time functionality and exceptional Swiss mechanical craftsmanship, reference 5524G remains one of Patek Philippe's most distinctive contemporary travel watches. Its unconventional design, practical complications and refined execution make it an appealing addition to any collection of fine independent and traditional Swiss watchmaking.
