The Ivan Berets Series 1 Oscuro is a striking independent timepiece that blends classical restraint with contemporary architectural design. Limited to just 20 examples, the Oscuro showcases remarkable finishing, in-house movement re-engineering and a refined minimalist aesthetic from one of independent watchmaking’s emerging talents.
Created by emerging independent watchmaker Ivan Berets on the shores of Lake Garda, the Series 1 Oscuro demonstrates a remarkably mature understanding of both design and traditional watchmaking. Developed from a prototype first conceived during his formal watchmaking studies, the Oscuro combines architectural minimalism with intricate hand-finishing and thoughtful mechanical execution.
The watch is housed within a beautifully proportioned rectangular stainless steel case measuring 30mm wide, 34mm in length and only 6.3mm thick. Slim and elegant on the wrist, the Oscuro balances contemporary styling with a restrained classical presence. Brushed surfaces are contrasted by polished bevels and accents, while the unusual crown placement between the upper lugs at twelve o’clock further enhances the clean uninterrupted case lines.
Beneath the flat sapphire crystal sits a dark rhodium-plated dial available in either gratté or frosted finishes. The textured surface creates a stark and understated backdrop for the applied brushed steel chapter ring positioned at the centre of the display. Flame-treated purple hands introduce a subtle but highly distinctive contrast, echoed by the visible screw heads positioned within the dial architecture.
Turning the watch over reveals the true depth of Berets’ craftsmanship. While based on the renowned Peseux 7001 calibre, the movement has been extensively reworked in-house, with structural and mechanical components remanufactured to suit the rectangular case design. Berets has also developed his own balance bridge architecture, further separating the movement from its origins.
Executed in untreated German silver, the movement features a three-quarter plate construction with broad vertical Geneva stripes, sharply executed anglage and clean architectural symmetry throughout. Fully wound, the calibre delivers approximately 45 hours of power reserve while operating at a traditional 21,600 vibrations per hour.
Limited to only twenty numbered examples, the Series 1 Oscuro represents a highly compelling debut from a young independent watchmaker whose work already displays a clear and confident creative identity.
