The Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 is one of the most enduring and recognisable vintage Rolex sports watches, combining restrained design with the robustness of the Oyster case. Produced from the early 1960s until 1989, the reference established the classic Explorer formula with its 36mm stainless-steel case, black dial and highly legible 3-6-9 Arabic numeral layout.

This particular example is powered by the early-generation Rolex Calibre 1560, an automatic mechanical movement with 26 jewels, operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour and providing approximately 42 hours of power reserve. The Calibre 1560 introduced Microstella regulation to the Explorer and preceded the later Calibre 1570 used in subsequent Ref. 1016 production.

Its original black dial and hands have been preserved during restoration, retaining the character and authenticity that are particularly important to collectors of vintage Rolex. The dial's straightforward configuration combines luminous hour markers, prominent Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9, and a central seconds display, creating exceptional readability without unnecessary complication.

The stainless-steel Oyster case has been refinished and retains visible signs of its history, including dents and scratches, particularly around the bezel at 3 o'clock. The watch is currently fitted with a non-original black leather strap, which can be changed to an alternative style if preferred.

Importantly, the Calibre 1560 has been fully serviced by a Rolex-trained watchmaker and is reported to be in full running condition. The watch is supplied with a two-year warranty, making this Ref. 1016 an appealing opportunity to acquire one of Rolex's definitive vintage tool-watch designs with its original dial and hands intact.
