The Sarpaneva Lunations is one of the defining creations in contemporary independent watchmaking. Designed and built by Finnish master watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, it combines the brand’s unmistakable Korona case with an exceptional in-house manual winding movement and one of the most technically impressive moon phase displays ever produced. Beautifully engineered and highly customisable, the Lunations is a watch created for collectors seeking originality, craftsmanship and true independence.
Few independent watches are instantly recognisable from across a room.
The Sarpaneva Lunations is one of them.
Created by Finnish master watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, the Lunations perfectly captures everything that has made the Helsinki-based watchmaker one of the industry's most distinctive creative voices. From its sculptural Korona case and unmistakable moon-faced crown to its dramatic skeletonised dial and mesmerising lunar display, every element reflects Sarpaneva's uncompromising approach to independent watchmaking.
Measuring 42mm in diameter and just 9.8mm thick, the case is crafted from Finnish Outokumpu Supra 316L stainless steel with an elegant satin finish that complements the watch's architectural design. The deep scalloped bezel has become synonymous with Sarpaneva's creations, while anti-reflective sapphire crystals on both sides allow uninterrupted views of the movement and dial.
The dial is a masterclass in depth and mechanical theatre.
Its laser-cut skeletonised baseplate offers glimpses into the movement beneath, while an elevated index ring creates an impressive three-dimensional appearance. Large Super-LumiNova hour markers ensure excellent legibility in low light, contrasting beautifully against the dark DLC-coated architecture.
Strategically placed openings expose key mechanical elements throughout the dial. The balance wheel, mainspring barrel and motion works remain visible, constantly reminding the wearer that every indication is mechanically driven.
Dominating the lower half of the dial is the feature that defines the Lunations.
Rather than employing a conventional moon phase aperture, Sarpaneva developed an extraordinary fibre-optic display that projects the brand's famous moon face through a translucent matrix of optical cells. Beneath this sits an incredibly precise moon disc that follows the lunar cycle of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.3 seconds.
The result is exceptional astronomical accuracy.
The moon phase requires correction by just a single day every 14,000 years, placing it amongst the most accurate mechanical moon phase complications available today.
Turning the watch over reveals the full brilliance of Sarpaneva's first in-house calibre, appropriately named the Moonment. Developed over many years, the manual winding movement was designed specifically around the moon phase complication rather than adapting an existing architecture.
The reverse display is almost as captivating as the front. Twin moon discs rotate beneath an engraved scale indicating both the waxing and waning phases, allowing the moon cycle to be read with even greater precision while also making setting the complication remarkably intuitive.
The Moonment calibre operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivers approximately 60 hours of power reserve. Every component exhibits the high level of finishing expected from a modern independent manufacture, while the open architecture provides an uninterrupted view of the movement's mechanical artistry.
As with many Sarpaneva watches, the Lunations is highly configurable. Collectors can personalise numerous details, including dial finishes, strap colours and other aesthetic elements, ensuring that no two examples need be identical.
The Lunations is far more than a moon phase watch. It represents Stepan Sarpaneva's vision of independent watchmaking distilled into a single creation. Technically innovative, visually unmistakable and mechanically fascinating, it stands as one of the most distinctive contemporary interpretations of one of horology's oldest complications.
