Inspired by the dramatic landscape of the Red Planet, the Sarpaneva Stardust Mars combines Finnish independent watchmaking with bold contemporary design. Limited to just 20 pieces, it features a richly layered DLC-coated dial, vibrant multi-coloured Super-LumiNova and a modified Chronode automatic movement housed within the iconic Korona case. Distinctive, highly detailed and unmistakably Sarpaneva, the Stardust Mars is a modern collector’s piece unlike anything else.
The best independent watches don't simply tell the time.
They tell a story.
The Sarpaneva Stardust Mars transports its wearer far beyond Earth, drawing inspiration from the colours, textures and mystery of the Red Planet to create one of the most distinctive contemporary watches available today.
Designed by Finnish master watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, the Stardust Mars perfectly captures the brand's signature fusion of sculptural design, technical craftsmanship and artistic imagination. Produced in a strictly limited edition of just 20 pieces, it is a rare opportunity to own one of Sarpaneva's most visually expressive creations.
The watch is housed within the instantly recognisable Korona case, crafted from Finnish Outokumpu Supra 316L/4435 stainless steel. Measuring 42mm in diameter and 10.4mm thick, the case combines muscular proportions with elegant wearability. Its signature scalloped bezel, alternating brushed and polished finishes and moon-faced crown at four o'clock immediately identify the watch as a Sarpaneva creation.
The dial is where the Stardust Mars truly comes to life.
Constructed from four individual layers, it creates remarkable depth while capturing the rugged character of the Martian landscape. The matt rust-coloured base resembles the dusty surface of Mars, while above it sits a beautifully skeletonised stainless steel lattice finished in black DLC. Floating above the structure is an open-worked chapter ring, giving the dial an architectural quality rarely seen in contemporary watchmaking.
The display remains refreshingly uncluttered.
Hours and minutes are accompanied by a decentralised small seconds display positioned between nine and eleven o'clock. Rather than using a conventional seconds hand, Sarpaneva employs a miniature spaceship that slowly orbits the dial, adding a playful detail that perfectly complements the celestial theme.
As daylight fades, the watch undergoes another transformation.
Four separate colours of Super-LumiNova illuminate the dial, creating an impressive display that feels almost otherworldly. The open hour numerals glow in soft blue, while the flame-blued hour and minute hands feature vivid green luminous arrow tips for exceptional legibility. Orange accents divide the small seconds display, and the tiny spacecraft gains its own blue luminous highlight, producing a dynamic composition that rewards every glance in darkness.
The reverse of the watch reveals the mechanical heart beneath.
Visible through the sapphire caseback is the modified Chronode P1003 automatic movement. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering approximately 60 hours of power reserve, the calibre consists of 244 components and 34 jewels, providing proven Swiss reliability alongside Sarpaneva's distinctive finishing.
The movement is finished in matte rhodium plating and fitted with the brand's signature moon-faced rotor, which rotates smoothly on ceramic ball bearings while maintaining efficient winding performance.
Limited to only 20 examples worldwide, the Stardust Mars perfectly illustrates why Stepan Sarpaneva occupies such a unique position within independent watchmaking. It is technically accomplished, visually unforgettable and filled with thoughtful details that continue to reveal themselves long after first impressions fade.
