The Sarpaneva Lunations Eclipse is one of the most original interpretations of the moon phase complication in contemporary watchmaking. At first glance, its restrained monochrome dial displays only the time. Turn the watch over, however, and the spectacular in-house Moonment calibre reveals one of the world’s most accurate moon phase displays. Produced in just five pieces annually, the Lunations Eclipse is an exceptionally exclusive creation from Finnish independent watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva.
Some watches reveal everything at first glance.
The Sarpaneva Lunations Eclipse does precisely the opposite.
Created by Finnish independent watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, the Lunations Eclipse takes the award-winning architecture of the original Lunations and turns it on its head. Rather than placing the moon phase front and centre, Sarpaneva hides his most impressive complication entirely from view, rewarding only the owner with one of the most captivating displays in modern horology.
The result is a watch that feels wonderfully understated from the front while concealing remarkable mechanical artistry on the reverse.
The familiar Korona case is crafted from Finnish Outokumpu Supra 316L stainless steel, measuring 42mm in diameter and just 9.8mm thick. Deep scalloped case flanks, alternating brushed and polished finishes and the signature moon-faced crown at four o'clock immediately identify the watch as a Sarpaneva creation, yet the overall appearance remains surprisingly restrained.
The dial embraces minimalism.
A finely skeletonised stainless steel lattice provides texture and depth without overwhelming the eye. Against this monochrome backdrop, only the beautifully skeletonised hour and minute hands indicate the time, blending almost seamlessly into the architecture beneath. There is no moon phase aperture, no oversized complication and no visual distraction.
Everything about the front of the watch encourages quiet appreciation.
Turn the watch over and its true personality emerges.
Visible beneath the sapphire display back is Sarpaneva's remarkable in-house Moonment calibre, dominated by an exquisitely engraved 18-carat gold moon bearing the unmistakable Sarpaneva moon face. Orbiting this centrepiece are two opposing discs that rotate around the moon over a complete lunar cycle of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.3 seconds.
The engineering is as impressive as the presentation.
Twin pointer indicators allow the wearer to read the precise age of the moon by aligning against a detailed waxing and waning scale marked in 12-hour increments. This ingenious arrangement also makes the moon phase remarkably easy to adjust via the crown while offering an extraordinary level of astronomical precision.
Like the original Lunations, the complication requires correction by just a single day every 14,000 years, placing it amongst the most accurate mechanical moon phase systems available.
Powering the watch is Sarpaneva's first fully in-house calibre, the manually wound Moonment movement. Developed over many years, it represents a milestone for the Finnish manufacture and perfectly embodies Sarpaneva's philosophy of combining traditional complications with highly individual design.
Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, the movement provides approximately 60 hours of power reserve while showcasing meticulous finishing throughout the open architecture.
Exclusivity is another defining characteristic of the Lunations Eclipse.
Production is limited to just five pieces per year, making it one of the rarest watches produced by the independent manufacture. Buyers can further personalise their watch through a selection of handmade leather straps or specify the distinctive Moonbridge stainless steel bracelet, ensuring each example reflects its owner's individual taste.
The Lunations Eclipse is a fascinating exercise in restraint. Rather than announcing its complexity to the world, it hides one of watchmaking's oldest and most beautiful complications where only its owner is likely to discover it. It is thoughtful, technically exceptional and unmistakably Sarpaneva.
