One of Britain’s oldest watch companies, Fears has a significant history which dates back to 1846, when the founder Edwin Fears first established the business in Bristol, England. Now in the safe hands of the founder’s great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, who reawakened the family business from a lengthy slumber, Fears are once again firmly rooted within the landscape of British watchmaking.   

Quintessentially British in character, the cushion-shaped case of the Fears Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour Raven Black watch is inspired by a gentlemen’s watch from the Fears archives from the 1920s. Polished and brushed finishes enhance its curved profile, and it is fitted with a rounded onion-shaped crown whose functional grooves add a flourish to its design. While the handsome tuxedo styling of the watch ensure it fits effortlessly into the dress watch category, the ergonomic characteristics of the case, and its robust water resistance of 100m lend it perfectly to daily wear too.

The dial is rendered with a glossy black finish, with concentric guilloché detailing on the central sector leading to a sunburst finish on which the minutes scale is printed in white. Against its pristine white background the black hour numeral stands out superbly in readiness for its instantaneous ‘jump’ when the Fears-shaped minutes hand passes. Other subtle nuances such as the hand-applied silver Rhodium-plated ring around the hour window, and the brushed and polished chapter rings bring added depth and beauty to the dial, particularly when the various finishes and details catch and play with the light.

Inside, and beating at a rate of 28’800 vib/h, the automatic JJ01 movement is based on a Swiss Sellita SW200 calibre, and features a module developed in-house by Christopher Ward. The movement has a power reserve of 39 hours, and is regulated to Chronometer grade ensuring precision.
