Presented in celebration of the tenth anniversary of The Limited Edition, the Ophion Black Ember watch features a beautifully rendered dial of deep black, enlivened by the warm hues of pink gold. Established in 2014, Ophion combine state of the art manufacturing processes with traditional watchmaking skills to create contemporary timepieces infused with retro and classical styling. A natural fit for the portfolio of The Limited Edition, Ophion watches are crafted in small series and manufactured with a meritorious level of attention to detail, accentuated with subtle elements of in-house hand finishing. Released in an exclusive edition of only sixty pieces, the Ophion Black Ember is an expressive piece that evokes the curvaceous elegance and refinement for which this youthful independent watchmaking company are renowned.
A Dark Beauty
Beneath a domed sapphire crystal which features anti-reflective coating on both sides, the dial is fully appreciable regardless of the angle of view. Subtle texturing enhances its deep black surface while pink gold-toned elements provide a striking contrast against the dark background and add a visual intensity to the display.
As with all Ophion watches, the detailing is superb. A pink gold toned laser cut chapter ring defines the central section, and this theme is further enhanced by pink gold Breguet style arabic numerals which are individually applied, adding depth to the arrangement. The hour and minute hands are also manufactured in the same pink gold finish, and receive no less attention. The hour indicator features the distinctive Vélos skeletonised arrow tip, while the slender minute hand curves downwards at its tip where it meets the chapter ring, and these are complemented by an incredibly fine counter-weighted seconds hand which spans outwards to the perimeter of the dial.
An Ode to Pocket Watches
Classical, yet exhibiting just the perfect touch of flamboyance which defines the brand, the curves and contours of the case of the Ophion Black Ember ensure that it is as aesthetically distinctive as it is tactile. Measuring 39mm across and 10.4mm tall, its pebble-smooth form is enhanced by a fine matte finish, while its rounded bezel and charming teardrop lugs add further to the satisfying aesthetics of its profile. Manufactured in Grade 5 titanium, and fitted with a gently fluted crown, the housing exhibits the design finesse and character for which Ophion are acclaimed.
On the underside, a sapphire caseback reveals the manual winding movement which has been manufactured by MHVJ and Soprod in Switzerland. Extensively reworked by Ophion, the original main plate of the calibre has been replaced with custom made bridges, which recall those found on historical pocket watch movements, whilst the pared back arrangement offers a view of the balance wheel. Notably, Ophion have a deeply rooted philosophy of upholding historically significant hand craftsmanship, and this is affirmed in the finishing used on the bridges, with the applied hammered textured decoration simulating the mercury evaporation once used. Beating at a rate of 28’800 vib/h, the movement delivers an impressive five day (120 hour) power reserve via two barrels.
A piece of distinguished sophistication the Ophion Black Ember limited edition is presented on a hand stitched strap of sustainable calfskin leather, and can be ordered with either a titanium or pink gold plated pin buckle.
