Fears Brunswick Midas II

One of Britain’s oldest watch companies, Fears has a significant history which dates back to 1846, when the founder Edwin Fears first established the business in Bristol, England. Now in the safe hands of the founders great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, who reawakened the family business from a lengthy slumber, Fears are once again firmly rooted within the landscape of British watchmaking.

Taking inspiration from the company’s rich heritage, the case of the Brunswick  Brunswick Midas II watch takes its styling cues from a gentlemen’s cushion cased watch from the 1920s. Crafted from stainless steel, and sized at 38mm across, the curved profile of the casing is enhanced by brushed and polished finishes before undergoing meticulous gold plating with 22ct yellow gold, and it is fitted with an onion-shaped crown.

Reminiscent of gold on gold watches of the 1970s, the dial surface is beautifully executed with an 18ct yellow gold galvanic coating and a glass bead blasted finish, giving its champagne tone a frosted texture that is alive with sparkling nuances, while the small seconds at the six o’clock has a contrasting concentric finish. The hour numerals are hand applied and finished with Black Gold, transforming their appearance from silver to dark brown or black with each subtle wrist movement. Likewise, the openworked hours and minutes hands have a blue PVD finish that changes from black to electric blue as they catch and play with the light, while both the minutes track and the hour track are minimal allowing the golden surface to become the visual highlight of the watch.

The watch is powered by a Swiss made manual winding ETA 7001 movement, with 42 hours power reserve. Each calibre features blued screws, rhodium plated bridges and Côtes de Genève decoration with the finishing viewable through the sapphire caseback. In addition to this arrangement, the client can choose to equip their watch with a closed caseback for bespoke engraving purposes at the time of purchase. Presented with both a Fears Blue leather strap and an Alcantara strap in Chalk Blue, with quick-release spring-bars enabling an smooth change, this stunning new model will be a limited production timepiece.
