Created by Finnish independent watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, the Firehorse is one of the most visually striking contemporary watches available today. Produced individually to order, it combines the iconic Korona case with an extraordinary multi-layered stainless steel dial that transforms into a vivid display of coloured Super-LumiNova in darkness. Powered by a modified Chronode automatic movement with a 60-hour power reserve, the Firehorse is a remarkable fusion of sculpture, artistry and mechanical watchmaking.
Some watches impress through mechanical complexity. Others through finishing. The Sarpaneva Firehorse manages something far rarer by creating an emotional reaction the moment it catches the light.
Designed by Finnish independent watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, the Firehorse was originally conceived to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Horse, yet its appeal extends far beyond its inspiration. It is an artistic interpretation of mythology, light and colour, executed with the unmistakable design language that has defined Sarpaneva's work for more than two decades.
The watch is housed within the instantly recognisable Korona case, crafted from Finnish Outokumpu Supra stainless steel. Measuring 42mm in diameter and just 11.4mm thick, the case balances substantial wrist presence with excellent wearability. Its alternating brushed and polished surfaces highlight the distinctive deep scalloped recesses surrounding the case, while the moon-faced crown at four o'clock has become one of the most recognisable signatures in independent watchmaking.
The dial is where the Firehorse truly distinguishes itself.
Constructed from five individually layered stainless steel components, the dial creates exceptional depth and texture. Brushed metal surfaces interact beautifully with changing light, while the skeletonised architecture gradually reveals the silhouette of a horse emerging from within the design. Every engraved flame beneath the upper layers is individually filled with eight different colours of Super-LumiNova, creating an intricate mosaic that appears almost like stained glass.
In daylight the dial is captivating.
In darkness it becomes extraordinary.
As ambient light disappears, the coloured luminous pigments ignite into an explosion of vibrant blues, greens, oranges, yellows and reds, completely transforming the personality of the watch. Few modern watches undergo such a dramatic visual change between day and night.
Despite its artistic execution, legibility remains excellent. Luminous-tipped hour, minute and seconds hands remain easy to read against the complex dial architecture.
Powering the Firehorse is a specially modified Chronode P1003 automatic movement. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivering approximately 60 hours of power reserve, the movement combines proven Swiss engineering with Sarpaneva's own finishing touches. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement features a beautifully skeletonised rotor incorporating the brand's signature moon face, rotating smoothly on ceramic bearings.
Like all Sarpaneva creations, the Firehorse is individually manufactured to order rather than produced as a conventional limited edition. Buyers can personalise the handmade leather strap from a variety of colours, while the distinctive Moonbridge stainless steel bracelet is available upon request.
The Firehorse represents everything enthusiasts admire about independent watchmaking. It ignores convention in favour of artistic expression, combines exceptional craftsmanship with unmistakable originality and offers an ownership experience that few mainstream manufacturers could hope to replicate. It is less a conventional luxury watch and more a wearable piece of contemporary horological art.
